Modular Synthesis On The Moon -A new book on modular synthesis

Modular Moon is the first modular synthesis school in the world and is located in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. Founded by Anna Martinova, originally from the Baltic shores, the school teaches sound synthesis within the Eurorack domain. Recently the school produced a book for its students, presenting the modular synthesis school curriculum in printed form. Although it started out life as course notes to accompany the syllabus, it soon expanded, and became not only a teaching add, but also a reference book and a interesting read for those interested in modular synthesis. Later the decision was made to make it available to the public.

Chapter by chapter, it draws the newbie into the world of modular synthesis (and sound synthesis / music production / performance more generally).

Starting with the physics of sound and Eurorack standards, the book is based on a "Given System" configured from simple and affordable modules, which represent the basic synthesis building blocks: signal generators, modifiers, and controllers. Each block is explained individually in theory and in practice with patching examples.

From basic building blocks, the book evolves into more complex patches with added effects modules. Then it continues with multilayered example patches, showing how a person can build a performance. Additional content includes a survey of different synthesis methods with associated modules; a brief synthesis history in timeline form, including modern days; studio setup configurations; post processing and live performance tips; an introduction to synth-DIY and basic electronics.

The book was written by Tulpa Dusha (Anna Martinova) - sound artist from the Netherlands, and Pete Johnston - sound designer/technician and composer from the UK.
